Two Views on China’s Future GDP Growth Path

Hu Angang says China will have the world’s largest economy by 2020.

Others say the 30-year growth spurt is running out of steam.

Who’s right?

Well, we’ll know soon enough. My guess is that if China successfully adopts and enforces strong protection for intellectual property rights, Mr. Hu may be closer to right. That’s not inevitable, but I think it’s likely.

Without intellectual property rights protection I don’t see an easy path to a U.S.-sized economy for China. With intellectual property rights protection, China’s economic growth will be good for the entire world, not just China.
